The History of the Kansas City, MO Retired Firefighter Association
Updated On: Feb 15, 2017
The Kansas City MO Retired Firefighter Assoc. was formed in early 1993 with a mission to provide some means of communication to the retired firefighters of the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department and our widows, to provide communication between the retiree and our pension office, and to assist IAFF Local 42 in any way we can. From the beginning we also wanted to serve our community and much of our efforts have gone toward this.
On the communication side; in 1994 we purchased equipment to send phone messages to all our members and have continued to upgrade the system to handle over 500 persons per call session and we also provide mass email messaging. Sadly many of those messages are death and funeral announcements.
On June 24 we will host our 18 annual retiree picnic and all retired firefighters, widows, and their families are invited. December 6 we will be hosting our 6th annual Christmas party for our members, Active Retirees of Local 42 and our widows.
We continue to work closely with Local 42 and many of our members serve on Local 42 committees and we provide help on their events. Local 42 lobbied for a retiree to set on our pension board and we now have representation as a nonvoting member on that board. Two retirees also are members of the City’s healthcare trust that has kept in check the yearly healthcare costs to the city, its employees and retirees.
Without the financial help and commitment from Local 42 we could not provide the services at the level we are now enjoying today.
As for our commitment to the community for the first two years we helped the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Local 42 on the annual Boot Block and in 1995 we were contacted by the Multiple Sclerosis Society to help with their annual MS Walk. This started an 8 year relationship with them to transport their food and equipment for their Walks and the annual MS150 bike ride event. The last three years of the MS150 we provided the finish line lunch.
